Spray Tan Aftercare

While the Tan Develops

  • While processing with bronzer on, avoid getting wet, sweating, & touching your skin.
  • There is a big difference between a rinse (no soap) and a shower (with tan-safe soap) — your tech will thoroughly explain when to do each.
  • When sleeping in your tan, wear long sleeves & pants to protect your tan.
  • After 24 hours, it is important to hydrate your skin by drinking lots of water & applying lotion.

Aftercare

  • Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize: A well hydrated tan is a happy tan. Applying a quality daily moisturizer (I recommend SJOLIE Body Renew for AM and Tan Extend for PM) helps lock in the tan's color ensuring even fading. For extra dry skin try doubling down on your application and drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid exfoliation: While exfoliation is part of a healthy tan prep routine, it's best to avoid exfoliation while you have a tan so it's not easily removed. Types of exfoliation include:
    • Physical exfoliation — containing tiny particles such as coffee grounds, jojoba beads, or sugar granules that are massaged into the skin. Other examples include shaving, waxing, microdermabrasion treatments, face mitts, washcloths, body brushes, and towels.
    • Chemical exfoliation — AHA's, BHA's, retinols, and fruit enzymes. These can potentially compromise the longevity of a spray tan due to exfoliating properties.
  • Short showers, no soaks: Extended periods of hot water exposure and prolonged soaking can accelerate the fading of your tan. This caution applies to prolonged exposure to chlorinated and saltwater, which essentially amounts to another method of exfoliation. To maintain the radiance of your tan, choose shorter and cooler showers, ensure you gently pat yourself dry and minimize extended swimming sessions. Soaking in chlorine and salt water is generally considered a form of physical exfoliation. When you spend time in chlorinated or saltwater environments, the abrasive action of the water, along with particles in the water, can contribute to the gentle removal of dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. This process is similar to the action of physical exfoliation products like scrubs and brushes, where friction helps slough off the top layer of skin cells.
  • Mind your wardrobe: Wearing tight clothing and snug undergarments can create friction against your skin, potentially resulting in uneven fading. Whenever possible opt for dark, loose fitting, non-restrictive attire that gives your skin and your tan the freedom to breathe and thrive!

Maintain Your Glow

Here's an easy 3 step guide to extend the length of your tan!

  1. Use a gentle body wash (sulfate-free, oil-free, pH-balanced, and highly moisturizing! I suggest the SJOLIE Shower Gel.)
  2. Moisturize daily — use lightweight, oil-free, petroleum-free, alcohol-free, perfume-free, and non-exfoliating moisturizer. (I suggest SJOLIE Body Renew Moisturizer.)
  3. A tan extender at night will help maintain glow and ensure an even fade! Try SJOLIE's Tan Extend Lotion in the PM. (You'll want to wash hands after using this and wait 5 minutes before dressing and 8 hours before showering as this does contain 2% DHA!)
